The problem with automated accessibility tools. The role of testing professionals in web accessibility.

22.12.2009
There have been much said about web accessibility testing tools and they have been around for a long time historically representing a useful way of checking websites for accessibility. Web accessibility evaluation tools are used throughout all stages of web site development by web designers, developers, project managers, quality reviewers and other specialists at different stages of implementation of web site. According to the specific organization and web site for which evaluation tools will be used, different characteristics and features of web accessibility evaluation tools may be more or less important to the tool users however, any accessibility testing process must be viewed as a process that combines software tools with human judgment. But what we've seen during last years is a widespread of various automated web accessibility testing tools. Attracting by the ability to save a huge amount of time when checking for web accessibility any automated accessibility tool, being a piece of software, doesn't have very much in the way of common sense though. It will interpret each and every accessibility guideline literally without considering what else on the page.

Although the use of automated web accessibility tools is a very valuable step in assuring that a web site meets accessibility standards such as U.S Section 508 or the British Disability Discrimination Act, relying solely on their evaluation can result in circumstances that may exclude some portions of the public from a web site.

As it was indicated earlier any accessibility testing must be viewed as a process that combines automated software tools with human judgment. In turn, human judgment can be represented by the teamwork of real users with disabilities and accessibility experts with first-hand experience. It will allow:
  • evaluate accessibility issues spanning around broad range of users, which might not be found by individual users
  • perform initial review to identify any known barriers before evaluating with users
  • implement accessibility solutions with real-world practicality

Teaming users with disabilities and web accessibility experts in the evaluation process can provide many benefits as users with disabilities provide valuable guidance to experts allowing to ensure that web accessibility is provided to users with a range of disabilities and situations.

The role of testing professionals in web accessibility.
For users side everything is seems to be clear as no one can provide better guidance than users with disabilities themselves, but how about professional side, who should eventually work with users as well as who should conduct a preliminary review before evaluating with users? Who should guide development team and operate with web accessibility tools? An independent expert or developers themselves, or maybe software testing team?

In many cases it is exactly the testing specialists, who validate that web site is accessibility compliant, not mentioning usability and design testing. Software Testing professionals hold an expertise and knowledge in many related to web accessibility areas including, but not limited to web browsers, various platforms and devices. From this point testing engineers can take a role of web accessibility experts, who conduct a separate cycle for accessibility testing. However, in this model whole team should interact seamlessly while management should make sure that test team possesses all information on what should be tested and how it should be tested.
