As a software developer, you will be involved in programming software. You will typically use development environments like Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and programming languages like PHP, Java, Javascript, NET, C, C++, C#, Objective-C, Ruby and/or Python to develop new applications or to extend existing applications. Besides writing the software itself, as a software developer you are also involved in detecting and solving problems (bugs), testing the user interface and its usability, documenting the written software and implementing improvements for a better, faster and safer experience. The software you work on as a software developer depends entirely on the work or client. These can be simple web applications, but can also be complete Content Management Systems (CMS) or other software systems that are deployed by external customers, such as insurance companies and municipalities.

As a software developer you are involved in the entire process related to the development of new software such as complete computer programs, embedded systems and even games. Things like performing maintenance and updates, extensive testing, analysis and documentation of the software are all involved in your duties as a software developer. Documentation of the software is important, among other things, for other team members and engineers who may need to continue working on the software in the future.
